Current implementation context. The Department suspended Phase II in July 2026 and says implementation is paused in Phase 1. This guide explains the codified model and preparation workflow. Confirm the pathway required by your actual procurement. Read the current policy briefing.

Start with the status your contract requires

Getting CMMC certified begins with the procurement requirement. Identify the level, assessment type, affected information systems, and point at which the required status must be current. Level 1 follows a self-assessment pathway; Level 2 follows the self-assessment or C3PAO pathway specified for the work; Level 3 uses a government assessment by DCMA DIBCAC. These are different processes. Keep the controlling solicitation or subcontract language with your planning record and resolve unclear requirements through the contracting officer or prime contractor before buying a standard package.

Define the environment that will be assessed

Follow the relevant FCI or CUI from receipt through use, storage, sharing, backup, and disposal. Identify people, endpoints, servers, cloud offerings, facilities, and providers that participate. Apply the asset categories and scoping rules for the required level. Establish an inventory and diagram that match actual operations, including administrative tools and security services. Reducing unnecessary information movement can simplify an environment, but an exclusion needs an operational basis. A diagram that leaves out a real connection does not remove the associated responsibility.

Implement the safeguards and build an honest record

Compare the environment against the applicable requirements and assessment objectives. For each gap, assign an accountable owner, implementation action, dependency, and acceptance evidence. Technical work, staff procedures, and documentation need to develop together. At Level 2, make the System Security Plan describe the implemented system, its boundary, and how the safeguards operate. Review draft policies and AI-assisted descriptions with the people who administer the systems. Keep planned changes identifiable until testing shows they work, and protect assessment artifacts in an approved repository.

Choose readiness support for the work you need

CMMC Pulsar is a commercial readiness software option for organizing the path toward CMMC certification, including scope, controls, evidence, and documentation. Evaluate its current workflow at cmmcpulsar.com against your team’s needs and approved information-handling rules. Federal Bid Partners can be considered for hands-on preparation support under a defined statement of work. Clarify implementation responsibilities, provider coordination, and deliverables before engagement. A software subscription or advisory engagement does not issue certification, replace the required assessor, or establish that an untested safeguard is implemented.

Complete the required assessment and official steps

When a Level 2 certification assessment is required, engage an authorized or accredited C3PAO and agree on scope, logistics, evidence handling, and participants. Prepare staff to demonstrate actual processes and explain their own responsibilities. Use the assessment findings and permitted closeout process where applicable; conditional status is subject to specific restrictions and deadlines. Confirm the official record and the organization’s required affirmation in SPRS. A readiness dashboard, proposal statement, or consultant-produced certificate is not a substitute for the relevant official CMMC status.

Maintain what the assessment established

Build continuing compliance into onboarding, access changes, patching, provider oversight, configuration management, and incident preparation. Assign owners for recurring evidence and the annual affirmation, and track the assessment cycle appropriate to the pathway. Review new contracts and technology changes against the assessed boundary before relying on existing status. Leadership should be able to connect each representation to a defined environment and accountable operating team. Make those responsibilities part of ordinary management review. The useful outcome is an implemented, maintainable security program with the required assessment and affirmation, rather than a one-time documentation milestone.
