Short explanations with links to the deeper guidance and controlling sources.
What is CMMC?
CMMC is the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program used by the Department of Defense to assess specified cybersecurity requirements in contractor information systems.
How many CMMC levels are there?
There are three levels. Level 1 covers 15 basic FCI safeguarding requirements. Level 2 covers 110 NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2 requirements. Level 3 adds 24 selected enhanced NIST SP 800-172 requirements to a qualifying Level 2 foundation.
Does every federal contractor need CMMC?
CMMC applicability depends on the relevant DoD procurement, contract clauses, information handled, and applicable exceptions. Read the controlling solicitation, contract, and subcontract flowdowns.
Is Level 1 a third-party certification?
Level 1 follows an annual self-assessment and affirmation pathway. It is different from a Level 2 certification assessment performed by a C3PAO.
Does Level 2 always require a C3PAO?
The procurement specifies the required Level 2 self-assessment or C3PAO assessment pathway. Do not assume that one pathway applies to all contracts.
Can a POA&M be used for Level 1?
No. The CMMC rule does not permit a POA&M for achieving Level 1 status. Conditional Level 2 and Level 3 pathways have separate restrictions and closeout requirements.
Does using CMMC Pulsar make a company certified?
No. CMMC Pulsar supports readiness work. Official status depends on meeting the applicable requirements and completing the required assessment and affirmation pathway.
What does Federal Bid Partners do?
Federal Bid Partners offers commercial federal contracting and CMMC readiness support. Review its current service scope directly; readiness support is distinct from an independent certification assessment.
Is CMMC Registry an official government registry?
CMMC Registry is a private educational and commercial resource associated with Federal Bid Partners and CMMC Pulsar. It is not a government registry, a C3PAO directory, or a system for verifying contractor CMMC status. Official status is stored in SPRS.
How often is affirmation required?
An authorized affirming official submits the required affirmation after applicable assessment events and annually thereafter under 32 CFR 170.22. Assessment cycles and conditional closeout deadlines are separate obligations.
