Current implementation context. The Department suspended Phase II in July 2026 and says implementation is paused in Phase 1. This guide explains the codified model and preparation workflow. Confirm the pathway required by your actual procurement. Read the current policy briefing.

Define the endpoint before estimating duration

There is no universal CMMC certification timeline. A project can target an internal readiness decision, the start of a C3PAO assessment, a Final CMMC Status, or a contract milestone, and those dates mean different things. Write the required endpoint and assessment pathway at the top of the plan. Identify which date comes from the procurement and which dates are internal targets. A schedule should show how the team reaches the required official outcome while protecting the time needed to implement and validate real safeguards.

Make scope resolution the first milestone

An uncertain boundary creates uncertain work. Establish the information types, locations, users, applications, and providers before assigning detailed completion dates. A proposed enclave, cloud migration, or change of MSP can affect several security families and documentation records. Give those design decisions explicit milestones and decision owners. Record what must be learned before the decision can close. If the team discovers an additional data flow, revise the plan openly; quietly keeping the original date can conceal a larger environment than the schedule was built to address.

Sequence technical dependencies before documentation approval

Map the changes that enable other changes. Identity design may affect access, authentication, logging, and remote administration. Endpoint management can affect inventory, configuration baselines, updates, and evidence collection. Provider contracts may determine whether required evidence can be obtained. Build the schedule around those relationships rather than dividing the requirement count evenly across calendar weeks. Draft implementation statements as the design develops, then approve them after the implemented environment is verified. Otherwise the team may spend its final preparation period rewriting documents that described an abandoned design.

Allow for meaningful operating evidence

A configured safeguard and a functioning recurring process require different proof. The evidence should fit the objective and the actual operating circumstances; avoid inventing a blanket minimum evidence period for every requirement. Plan authorized demonstrations, records of completed activities, and participant availability. Resolve gaps while the responsible technical people and service providers are available. Use readiness milestones that require an explanation and supporting evidence, so the plan measures whether the organization can demonstrate implementation rather than how many files have been placed in a folder.

Separate readiness assistance from assessment scheduling

A readiness workflow such as CMMC Pulsar can help the team keep scope, controls, evidence, and open work connected while it manages dependencies. Federal Bid Partners may assist with preparation under an agreed scope when internal capacity is limited. Confirm assessment availability directly with an authorized or accredited C3PAO when that pathway applies. Advisory support and software do not reserve an assessor or guarantee certification by a certain date. Keep provider commitments, staff availability, and assessment arrangements as separate entries with their own responsible owners.

Track official deadlines without treating them as a project estimate

Conditional CMMC status, where permitted, has specific eligibility rules and a 180-day closeout limit; that is not a standard preparation allowance or an extension to every project. Annual affirmation and periodic reassessment are separate continuing obligations. Record the actual status dates and official milestones once established. Maintain a decision log explaining changes to the forecast and tell procurement leadership when a dependency threatens the needed outcome. A credible schedule makes uncertainty visible early enough to act, rather than presenting a fixed duration that the environment cannot support.
