The program in plain language
CMMC stands for Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification. The Department of Defense uses the program to assess whether contractor information systems meet specified cybersecurity requirements. It connects protection of Federal Contract Information (FCI) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) with an assessment and affirmation process. The relevant status applies to a defined assessment scope; it is not a general endorsement of every service a company sells.
Begin with the contract and the data
Read the solicitation, contract clauses, subcontract flowdowns, and information-handling instructions. Identify what your organization actually processes, stores, or transmits. A small business can need Level 2, and a large organization can have a limited FCI-only environment. Revenue, employee count, and the desire to display a badge do not select the correct level.
Three levels, different assessment paths
Level 1 addresses 15 basic safeguarding requirements for FCI. Level 2 addresses 110 requirements in NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2 for CUI. Level 3 adds 24 selected enhanced requirements from NIST SP 800-172 to a qualifying Level 2 foundation. Level 1 uses self-assessment; Level 2 uses the self or C3PAO pathway specified for the procurement; Level 3 uses a government assessment by DCMA DIBCAC.
Turn the explanation into a working plan
Write down the required level and assessment type, map the system boundary, assign accountable people, identify gaps, and gather evidence of actual implementation. Use the level comparison and scoping guides in this library before choosing tools or requesting a service proposal. A readiness plan should make the work and responsibilities visible before anyone promises a completion date.
