Distinguish the applicable baselines
CMMC Level 2 incorporates NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2, including requirement 3.5.3. That requirement addresses multifactor authentication for local and network access to privileged accounts and network access to non-privileged accounts. Level 1 uses the FAR 52.204-21 safeguarding baseline and should not be described as containing that identical blanket MFA requirement. Other contract terms or organizational security decisions may still require MFA. Confirm the actual level, procurement language, and systems before deciding what must be demonstrated. A recommendation to strengthen authentication should be clearly distinguished from a claim about a specific CMMC requirement.
Map identities beyond employee email accounts
List ordinary users, administrators, support identities, application accounts, processes acting on behalf of users, and relevant devices. Identify local accounts and separate cloud or application directories that are not governed by the main identity platform. Then map each access path to the resource it reaches and the kind of privilege involved. This prevents a common planning error: treating MFA on the main email login as complete coverage of the environment. NIST requirements 3.5.1 and 3.5.2 also address identification and authentication, so the review needs a coherent identity model rather than a product checkbox.
Verify the authentication mechanism and enforcement
MFA uses different authentication factors; asking for two passwords does not create two different factors. Review which mechanisms are configured and where policy enforcement occurs. Check relevant application, remote access, administrative, and local privileged paths with the people who operate them. Determine whether legacy protocols, alternate portals, or emergency processes create a route around the expected policy. Describe the observed behavior accurately and address gaps through the approved process. This article offers a review method, not an approval of a particular identity product, factor technology, or configuration for every contractor environment.
Handle exceptions and recovery as designed processes
Lost authenticators, new devices, service failures, and emergency administration require an authorized recovery process. Decide who can approve recovery, how identity is verified, what temporary access is permitted, and what evidence remains. An exception should be evaluated against the actual requirement and assessment objectives; labelling it a break-glass account does not automatically exempt it. Include provider responsibilities and technical constraints in the review. Never place live recovery codes or credentials in a public help request or ordinary assessment index. Store necessary sensitive material only through approved mechanisms with appropriate access restrictions.
Prepare evidence that shows coverage
A useful set may include the identity architecture, scoped account categories, policy configuration, approved procedures, and appropriate demonstrations of enforcement. Select evidence that answers the relevant assessment objectives and represents the current environment. Show how an authorized user reaches a resource and how an unauthorized or improperly authenticated attempt is handled where a test is appropriate. Keep a record of what was tested, by whom, and under what conditions. A licensing invoice demonstrates a purchase; it does not by itself establish deployment, policy assignment, or effective authentication on every access path.
Maintain identity controls as the environment changes
Review identity effects when adding a service, connecting a provider, changing remote access, or deploying new endpoints. Update the access path map and related SSP statements after the change is verified. CMMC Pulsar can be evaluated for connecting scope, control mapping, gap ownership, and evidence, while administrators remain responsible for configuring and testing identity safeguards. A readiness adviser can help organize questions but cannot infer complete MFA coverage from a screenshot. The practical milestone is a validated account and access model with demonstrable enforcement, supported by records appropriate to the applicable assessment.
