Define the job AI is allowed to perform

AI can help organize information, suggest missing questions, and improve draft wording. For CMMC preparation, suitable tasks may include outlining a procedure, explaining a requirement, or turning verified notes into an implementation statement. Decide the allowed task before entering information. Generating text is different from inspecting the deployed configuration, validating information categories, or making an official compliance representation. Keep accountable people responsible for those decisions. This is a practical documentation approach; CMMC does not turn an AI-generated packet into an assessment result merely because the documents are complete and professionally formatted.

Confirm the baseline and source material

Give the drafting process the relevant requirement identifiers and the verified environment facts it needs. Check which NIST revision applies to the CMMC level and current rule. NIST has published newer revisions, while the present CMMC Level 2 model incorporates Revision 2. A model can blend language from different versions and produce a plausible but unsuitable requirement summary. Use the official source to resolve discrepancies. Record uncertainties explicitly instead of asking the tool to fill them with assumptions. The same discipline applies to product features, provider duties, and operational frequencies that the source notes do not establish.

Approve information handling before using a tool

Review the service terms, permitted information types, organizational approval, and applicable contractual obligations before supplying system details or artifacts. Use sanitized or synthetic examples for initial demonstrations. Do not send CUI, active credentials, sensitive configurations, or assessment evidence to public or general-purpose AI services without an approved arrangement that meets the applicable conditions. A vendor statement that AI is secure does not establish those conditions for your environment. If the service would process, store, or transmit CUI or security protection data, evaluate the relevant CMMC provider treatment and other applicable requirements using the actual deployment.

Validate every operational claim in the draft

Have someone who knows the system check named products, configured features, account roles, approval steps, timing, and evidence references. Ask whether the described mechanism is deployed across the stated boundary. Compare the draft with current configuration, procedures, and provider responsibilities. Remove invented claims rather than polishing them. A useful review distinguishes factual errors, missing information, and genuine implementation gaps because they require different corrections. The SSP should explain the actual environment and safeguards under requirement 3.12.4; a confident description of a future purchase cannot substitute for the current implementation.

Review diagrams and mappings as carefully as prose

A generated network diagram can omit a backup service, misclassify an asset, or draw segmentation that does not exist. A control mapping can attach an artifact to the right family but fail to support the relevant objective. Walk through the represented workflow with technical staff and verify important relationships against the inventory and data flows. CMMC Pulsar publicly presents AI-assisted architecture and documentation with user review; use that model as a prompt to examine how approval works in practice. Ask whether changes can be corrected and whether the exported record preserves the final reviewed version.

Retain a clear approval trail

Record who reviewed the draft, what system version or period it describes, and where the authoritative sources and evidence can be found. Maintain an editable working copy separately from the approved version when that improves control. Reopen the review when the underlying environment changes. AI assistance can reduce repetitive writing, but its useful output is a verified document that staff can explain and demonstrate. Evaluate the workflow with a short, non-sensitive example before expanding use. The organization should remain able to justify every material implementation statement without relying on confident or fluent writing from the drafting tool.
